Bottom line first: Semporna is home to Sabah’s finest tropical diving. Mataking’s macro marine life diversity is extraordinarily rare on a global level; Kapalai is a beginner-friendly diving paradise; and Mabul balances diving with a rich cultural experience. OW certification averages ¥2,200–2,800; AOW is around ¥1,800–2,200. Accommodation in town is basic — save your budget for the island-hopping dives.
Semporna, on the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia, is the gateway to world-class dive sites including Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Sipadan, and beyond. The town itself is unremarkable, but the island diving experience from here is the kind that haunts ocean lovers for years.
Four Key Dive Sites in Detail
Mataking Island
Mataking consists of two islands connected at low tide by a sandbar you can walk across. The dive site known as “Painted Church” — with its colourful coral and green sea turtles in the same frame — has appeared in international dive magazines multiple times.
Dive highlights:
- Outstanding macro life: blue-ringed octopus, leaf fish, ghost pipefish, sea moths
- Pelagic encounters: barracuda schools, giant groupers, hawksbill turtles
- Visibility: 25–40 m, consistently excellent year-round
Book a Mataking island-hopping dive day tour via Klook — two boat dives, lunch, and equipment included at approximately ¥680 per person. Departures on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Kapalai
Kapalai is a resort built entirely over a reef, with 51 water chalets. Diving takes place right around the resort — the best dive sites are literally beneath the stilts. This makes it exceptionally beginner-friendly.
Highlights:
- Barracuda schools appear frequently
- Mola mola (ocean sunfish) sightings during their seasonal window
- Vibrant soft coral gardens
Sipadan — One of the World’s Top 10 Dive Sites
Sipadan is strictly limited to 120 divers per day and must be booked months in advance. Water temperature is 26–29°C, visibility exceeds 30 m, and the famous turtle cavern, barracuda tornado, and shark school are its three headline attractions.
The journey from Semporna takes about 45 minutes by boat. There is no accommodation on Sipadan; all visitors must return to Semporna on the same day.
Dive Certification Guide
OW (Open Water Diver)
| Component | Content | Price Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Theory | 5-module video + knowledge reviews | Included in course |
| Confined water | 4 skill sessions in a pool | Included in course |
| Open water | 4 open-water dives | Included in course |
| Total duration | 3 days | ¥2,200–2,800 |
Dive schools in Semporna vary widely in quality — choose a PADI five-star dive centre. Key things to check: instructor-to-student ratio (1:1 vs 1:2) and whether they have a dedicated pool for confined-water training.
AOW (Advanced Open Water Diver)
AOW requires five adventure dives; Night Dive and Wreck Dive are popular choices.
An AOW course typically takes 2 days and unlocks depths to 30 m. Sipadan requires AOW certification to dive, plus at least one specialty — the Deep specialty is the most practical choice.

Pre-Trip Checklist
- Reef-safe sunscreen: regular sunscreen containing oxybenzone kills coral — always use reef-safe formulations
- Seasickness tablets: speedboat rides to dive sites take 45 minutes to an hour; available at local supermarkets
- Cash: digital payment options are limited in Semporna town — bring ¥3,000–5,000 in cash (Malaysian ringgit) for dive schools and island-hopping fees
- Dive insurance: strongly recommended (DAN Dive Accident Insurance or AIG dive cover); emergency rescue from Sipadan can cost upwards of ¥100,000
