Cancun All-Inclusive Resort Ultimate Review: How to Holiday the Right Way on the Caribbean

Cancun is Mexico’s largest Caribbean resort city. The “Hotel Zone” (Zona Hotelera) is a crescent-shaped strip of land with Caribbean Sea on both sides — the blue of the water looks like someone spilled paint. Year-round temperatures of 25–35°C; January to March is the best season; the rainy season (May–October) brings afternoon showers that pass quickly.

All-inclusive (AI) is the dominant way to holiday in Cancun — one price covers unlimited food, drinks, free snorkelling, kayaking, and other water activities, perfect for travellers who want to switch their brains off and relax.

For families with children, Moon Palace is the standout — water park, rock climbing wall, bowling alley, and a kids’ club with supervised childcare. For couples, the Excellence brand is the pick — adults-only, no unruly children, higher restaurant quality.

Chichen Itzá Pyramid: One of the New Seven Wonders of the World

About 3 hours’ drive from the Hotel Zone, Chichen Itzá topped CNN’s 2019 ranking of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Mayan city was built in the 6th century AD and was the most important city-state on the Yucatan Peninsula at its peak.

Must-see highlights:

  • El Castillo (Kukulkan Pyramid): 30 m tall; 55 m per base side; 91 steps on each of the four stairways — adding the top platform equals exactly 365 (days in a year). During the spring and autumn equinoxes, sunlight creates a serpent shadow effect on the staircase — a demonstration of the Maya’s precise astronomical knowledge
  • Temple of the Warriors: surrounded by 1,000 columns; inside is a Chac Mool — a distinctive Maya stone sculpture of a reclining warrior figure holding a plate
  • Great Ball Court: the largest Maya ballcourt — the walls feature carved reliefs of players and gruesome decapitation scenes

Joining a day tour is recommended (~$60–80 including transport and guide); driving yourself means worrying about parking and navigation, while a guide provides essential historical context for every structure. Pre-book on Klook to avoid scrambling to find a tour on the day.

Isla Mujeres Day Trip

The most worthwhile day trip from Cancun — 20 minutes by ferry. The island is 8 km × 1 km; a golf cart tour takes about 2 hours. North Beach (Playa Norte) is dubbed “the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean” — the water is shallow and clear; you can wade 10–15 metres out and still not reach waist height.

Also worth visiting is Casa Cenote on the island’s south end — underground river water flows from a cave into the sea, with stalactites and magical light inside; snorkelling and kayaking are available through this bizarre underground world.

Food & Safety

Restaurants in the Hotel Zone cost 2–3 times more than in Mexican domestic cities, but AI packages cover dining anyway — eating out is mainly for exploring local flavours. In the old town (Centro), “La Habichuela” is a distinctive restaurant set inside a cave, running ~$30–50/person.

Cancun is generally safe as a tourist city, especially in the Hotel Zone. Don’t leave valuables on unattended beach chairs and don’t accept drinks from strangers.

Transport

Cancun Airport (CUN) is about 25 minutes from the Hotel Zone. Pre-booking a transfer runs ~$30–40; hailing a cab at the airport risks being overcharged. Use Welcome Pickups to pre-book an English-speaking driver — transparent pricing and smooth communication.
