Morocco’s desert is one of North Africa’s most accessible adventures — you can be riding a camel under stars just 9 hours after leaving Marrakech. But which desert tour should you take? The two main options couldn’t be more different.

Merzouga / Erg Chebbi (The Big Dunes)
Distance from Marrakech: ~450 km (~9 hours by car, usually overnight) Dune height: Up to 150 meters (the highest in Morocco) Vibe: Dramatic, touristy, activity-focused
Merzouga is the “Instagram desert” — those iconic photos of camel caravans silhouetted against golden dunes at sunset? Erg Chebbi. The dunes are massive, the camel rides are well-organized, and the sunrise views are genuinely transcendent.
What you’ll do:
- Ride camels through the dunes at sunset (1-2 hours)
- Stay in a desert camp (Bougainvillea or similar luxury camps cost €80-150/night)
- Watch the sunrise over the dunes (wake up 5:30 AM)
- Optional: sandboarding, ATV rentals, visit the oasis
Pros: Unforgettable visuals, largest dunes, well-established tourist infrastructure Cons: Very tourist-focused, camps can feel like “desert theme parks,” crowds around popular sunset spots
Zagora / Drâa Valley (The Authentic Journey)
Distance from Marrakech: ~350 km (~7 hours, often with stops) Dune height: Smaller but continuous (60-80 meters) Vibe: Authentic, remote, culturally rich
Zagora is the “real desert” — the camel trek is quieter, the valley has centuries of caravan history, and you pass through Berber villages and ksars (fortified villages) along the way. The famous sign in Zagora reads “Tombouctou 52 jours” (Timbuktu — 52 days), referencing the old caravan routes.
What you’ll do:
- Drive through the Anti-Atlas mountains and Drâa Valley (scenic route)
- Stay in a traditional Moroccan riad or smaller desert camp
- Shorter camel trek (45 min - 1 hour)
- Visit Tamegroute (historic library, pottery village)
Pros: More authentic feel, fewer tourists, culturally richer (ksars, libraries, oases) Cons: Smaller dunes (less dramatic photos), fewer activity options, longer drive to smaller feel
Which Should You Choose?

Booking Tips
Book your desert tour in Marrakech directly — the agency at your riad will usually have better rates than online booking (negotiate!). A 2-night tour should cost MAD 800-1500/person (€75-150) including transport, meals, camp, and camel trek.
GetTransfer provides airport and inter-city transfers in Morocco with fixed pricing, useful for Marrakech arrivals.
