The Philippines has over 7,000 islands, but two destinations consistently top the charts for travellers: Boracay and Palawan. They represent two entirely different island travel philosophies.

Boracay: The Party Island

Location: Central Philippines, Aklan Province How to get there: Caticlan Airport, then 15 minutes by fast boat Best season: November–May (dry season)

Boracay’s Character

Boracay is just 7 km long and 1 km at its widest — small enough to loop by e-bike in 20 minutes. Yet it holds Southeast Asia’s whitest sand beach (White Beach) and some of the region’s most vibrant nightlife.

Best for:

  • First-time visitors to the Philippines who want the “classic island experience”
  • Those who enjoy buzz, bars, and nightlife
  • Families with children (small island, easy to navigate)
  • Budget-conscious travellers (competition keeps prices transparent)

Watch out for:

  • After the 2018 environmental closure and reopening, visitor numbers have fully recovered — it’s now very commercialised
  • Beach vendors and massage hawkers are numerous; practise polite refusals
  • Sand quality varies significantly across S1–S3; S1 is the cleanest but most expensive

Palawan: The Wild Frontier

Location: Southwest Philippines, across the sea from Boracay Main hubs: Puerto Princesa, El Nido, Coron How to get there: Puerto Princesa Airport (connecting via Manila), then by road or boat

Palawan’s Character

Palawan is the Philippines’ most pristine province and was named “World’s Most Beautiful Island” by Condé Nast Traveler in 2019. Its limestone karst topography has created hundreds of hidden lagoons and uninhabited islands.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Boracay if:

  • It’s your first trip to the Philippines and you want the “standard island experience”
  • You’re travelling with children and need solid infrastructure
  • You enjoy nightlife and parties
  • Your trip is short (3–5 days) and you want pure relaxation without hassle

Choose Palawan if:

  • You’ve already done Southeast Asian beach resorts and want something more raw
  • You’re into diving/snorkelling (world-class sites)
  • You crave peace, quiet, and a sense of seclusion
  • You enjoy adventure and outdoor activities (kayaking, trekking, jungle hikes)
  • Your trip is longer (7–10 days)

Booking Advice

Island hopping tours in the Philippines can usually be booked locally, but during peak season (December–March) El Nido tours fill up quickly. Klook offers advance booking for Puerto Princesa and El Nido island tour packages — slightly cheaper than walk-in and guarantees availability.

Tiqets handles advance reservations for the Puerto Princesa Underground River (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) — daily visitor numbers are capped, and showing up without a booking can mean a wasted trip.
