Phuket Diving Complete Guide 2026: OW+AOW Certification, Dive Site Recommendations, and Liveaboard Options
Phuket is one of the most established beginner diving destinations in Southeast Asia. In 2026, with the Similan Islands (Similan Islands) reopening for snorkeling and diving activities, and the underwater ecosystems of Racha Yai and Koh Phi Phi continuing to recover, Phuket has once again become the top certification destination for diving beginners worldwide. Transparent pricing, consistent teaching quality, and a pleasant tropical climate — these are the core reasons to choose Phuket for your diving experience.
Why Get Certified in Phuket?
The core advantages of diving in Phuket are value, infrastructure, and the English-language environment. The PADI Open Water Diver (OWD) certification course in Phuket runs approximately ¥2,500–3,500 RMB in 2026 (including a 3-day course, equipment, and materials). The same course in Koh Tao, Thailand costs approximately ¥2,000–2,800 but in tougher conditions; in the Maldives or Red Sea it’s ¥5,000–8,000.
Phuket dive schools concentrate around Patong Beach and Chalong Bay, both with many PADI-certified schools offering Chinese or English instruction. If your English handles basic instructions, English-language dive schools typically deliver higher teaching quality — their instructors come from more diverse and professional backgrounds, while Chinese-language schools in peak season often find themselves short-staffed relative to student demand.
OW+AOW Combined Course: Is It Worth It?
For travelers with limited time, taking OW+AOW together is more efficient. OW (Open Water) involves 4 dives; AOW (Advanced Open Water) involves 5 dives; completing all 9 dives takes 3.5 days. The core additional skills AOW provides over OW include: deep diving (30m), underwater navigation, DPV (diver propulsion vehicle), and peak buoyancy control. The last two are the skills that genuinely elevate the diving experience.
Combined course total cost is approximately ¥4,500–6,000 RMB, about 15% cheaper than taking them separately. The tradeoff is 6 dives per day at high intensity, which demands significant physical stamina and concentration. If you’re not generally active, it’s better to take them separately or leave at least one rest day between OW and AOW.
Dive Site Selection: Racha Island vs Similan Islands
Racha Island (Racha Yai & Racha Noi): Approximately 1.5 hours by boat from Phuket — clear water, white sand, coral health above average. Suitable for OW students doing their first open water dives; depth doesn’t exceed 25m; low current, safe conditions. Downside: crowded in peak season, with a dozen dive boats potentially submerging in the same area simultaneously.
Similan Islands: World-class diving destination, approximately 2.5–3 hours by boat from Phuket. Underwater scenery includes giant bumphead parrotfish, hawksbill sea turtles, grey reef sharks, and spectacular soft coral gardens. The Similans are only open from November to April each year; the 2026 season opens November 1. In peak season, liveaboards and day dives need to be booked two months ahead.
Liveaboard is the best way to experience the Similans. Dive boats with 2 or 3 cabins sail between the islands, visiting different dive sites each day, avoiding the long transit time and seasickness risks of day trips. Similan liveaboard prices from 2026 range from approximately ¥3,500–6,000 RMB/night (including accommodation, meals, and 4 dives per day), with a minimum 3-night booking.

Diving Insurance: Why It Matters
Diving is a high-risk sport — standard travel insurance does not cover medical evacuation and decompression chamber treatment for diving accidents. Scuba-specific diving insurance (such as DAN — Diving Alert Network) is the standard for divers. DAN Asia-Pacific membership is approximately ¥400 RMB/year, covering unlimited emergency medical evacuation and decompression chamber treatment.
If your travel time is short and you don’t want an annual policy, single-trip diving insurance is available. Some AirHelp partner insurance products offer diving-specific add-ons. Note, however, that AirHelp’s core business is flight delay and cancellation compensation — their diving add-on coverage is limited. Read the terms carefully before purchasing.
