Complete Grindelwald Hiking Guide: A Hiker’s Paradise beneath the Jungfrau
Grindelwald is the most popular hiking destination in the Swiss Alps and the gateway village to the Jungfrau region. Nestled on the northern flank of the Eiger at 1,034 metres elevation, it is encircled by snow peaks, with lush meadows and centuries-old wooden chalets below — a scene straight from a medieval pastoral painting.
Why Choose Grindelwald?
Grindelwald is Switzerland’s most fully developed high-alpine hiking zone. The Jungfraubahn railway — Europe’s highest railway station — reaches 3,454 metres at the Jungfraujoch, climbing 1,400 vertical metres in under 50 minutes: one of the world’s most remarkable feats of railway engineering. The surrounding hiking routes range from gentle one-hour strolls to eight-hour high-alpine traverses.
Another advantage: excellent connectivity. Direct trains run to Interlaken, and the Brünig line connects towards Lucerne and Geneva. From Zurich Airport to Interlaken Ost is about 2 hours by train with no transfers required.
Classic Hiking Routes
Route 1: First to Bachalpsee Lake (Beginner)
Take the gondola from Grindelwald to First (2,167 m), then hike down to Bachalpsee Lake in about 40 minutes. The difficulty is very low, with multiple viewpoints along the way — the Eiger, Mönch, and Schreckhorn reflected in the lake make for spectacular photos. Round-trip gondola tickets are about CHF 64; if you plan to hike down and take the gondola only one way, a single ticket suffices.
Route 2: Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg Classic Panorama Route (Intermediate)
The classic route from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg takes about 2 hours, passing through Switzerland’s most iconic alpine meadow scenery with the pyramid-shaped Eiger and Jungfrau as constant companions — the scene on more Swiss postcards than any other. Most of the path is level boardwalk, accessible to most hikers.
Route 3: Lauberhorn Endurance Challenge (Advanced)
The Lauberhorn is famous as a downhill ski racing course and opens to hikers in summer. Take the gondola from Grindelwald to Altboden, then follow the ridge trail upward — about 5–6 hours total with 1,000 metres of elevation gain. Wide-open views over the entire Grindelwald village and four surrounding peaks make this suitable for hikers with genuine alpine experience.
Swiss Rail Pass Options
Swiss public transport fares are steep, but passes (Swiss Travel Pass) reduce costs significantly. An 8-day consecutive pass costs about CHF 400, covering all trains, buses, and lake steamers nationwide, plus free entry to most museums and city transport. The Jungfrau region additionally requires a Half Fare Card to access 50% discounts on mountain transport.
An even more flexible option is the Swiss Travel Pass Flex — choose any number of days within a month to use it. If your activities are focused on the Jungfrau area, a regional pass for that zone alone (~CHF 250/5 days) is sufficient.

Accommodation Recommendations and Booking Strategy
Grindelwald hotel prices are mid-to-upper range for Switzerland. Budget guesthouses (hostel dormitory) cost about CHF 40–60/night; private hotel double rooms run CHF 150–300; 4-star resort hotels from CHF 300–600. Peak season (June–September) and Christmas holidays must be booked 3 months in advance.
Recommended properties: Arena Hotel is a three-star family-run guesthouse with an excellent location and generous breakfast, ~CHF 200/night; Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof is a storied five-star from CHF 450; Sunstar Hotel has an indoor pool and sauna, ideal for unwinding after a day’s hiking.
Practical Information
Switzerland uses Swiss Francs (CHF); 1 CHF ≈ ¥8 RMB. Euros are accepted in most places, but change is given in francs. Mountain restaurant prices are high — a pasta or fried rice dish costs about CHF 20–30. Bringing your own snacks and water saves money. High-altitude UV is intense — SPF 50 sunscreen and sunglasses are essential.
