Bottom line up front: The GoldenPass from Lucerne to Interlaken takes about 2 hours, passing through spectacularly blue lakes including Lungernsee and Lake Brienz — the panoramic carriages’ large glass windows give completely unobstructed views. The Jungfrau Railway (Jungfraubahn) is Europe’s highest railway line; from Interlaken Ost to the Jungfraujoch summit takes about 2 hours 20 minutes, climbing 1,400 metres in elevation.
Switzerland’s railway system is one of the world’s most precise and efficient transport networks — and the GoldenPass and Jungfrau Railway are its two most dazzling jewels.

Jungfrau Railway (Jungfraubahn)
Mountain Route
Departing from Interlaken Ost, the Jungfrau Railway calls at:
- Zweilütschinen (interchange)
- Grindelwald: First stop; worth stopping to explore
- Kleine Scheidegg: Connection point at 2,061 m
- Jungfraujoch: Summit terminus at 3,454 m

- Alpine Sensation: The fascinating history of how the Jungfrau Railway was built
- Glacier Plateau: Stand at the very top, surrounded by snow on all sides
Weather and Tips
Jungfraujoch temperatures range year-round from roughly -5°C to 3°C — a down jacket is essential regardless of season. Visibility at the summit is highly weather-dependent; check the official Jungfrau website the evening before. On clear days you can see Mont Blanc, 40 km away in France.
Towns Along the Route
Lungern
About 40 minutes by train from Lucerne. Lungernsee glows blue-green; the village preserves traditional Swiss timber chalet architecture. With very few tourists, this is an ideal spot for authentic Swiss village photography.
Grindelwald
Grindelwald is the largest village in the Jungfrau Region, renowned for hiking and skiing. In summer, take the cable car up to First Cliff Walk to look down over the entire Grindelwald valley.
Pre-book transfers between Grindelwald and Interlaken via Welcome Pickups — 7-seater minivans at ~€60/journey, ideal for groups of 4+.
