Switzerland is the Mecca of train travel. Minute-precise timetables, a nationwide rail network, snow peaks and meadows and lakes flashing past the windows — in 2026, Swiss rail continues to define what “ultimate track experience” truly means.

Must-Ride Panoramic Trains

Glacier Express: St. Moritz ↔ Zermatt — 8 hours, crossing 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. “The world’s slowest fast train.”

Bernina Express: Chur ↔ Tirano — UNESCO World Heritage railway, crossing 55 tunnels and 196 bridges. The richest scenery of all Switzerland’s scenic trains.

GoldenPass: Lucerne ↔ Montreux — the classic route, with lakes and vineyard scenery throughout.

4-Day Highlights:

  • Day 1: Zurich → Lucerne (GoldenPass section)
  • Day 2: Lucerne → Interlaken (paddle steamer + train)
  • Day 3: Jungfrau day trip
  • Day 4: Interlaken → Montreux (Glacier Express section)

Booking Tips

Swiss rail tickets get cheaper the earlier you book. Seat reservation fees run CHF 13–33 in 2nd class (depending on the train); same-day purchase can be 30% more expensive. Swiss Travel Pass holders riding the Glacier Express must still pay a seat reservation fee of CHF 33.

For accommodation, base yourself in Interlaken or Lucerne — both are major rail hubs with easy access to all attractions.

Connectivity: Switzerland is not in the EU, but mobile roaming policies are similar to EU countries. An Airalo Europe plan covers Switzerland, or choose Saily at €15/10 GB for a Europe-wide plan.

Swiss train travel is a “journey as destination” experience — the scenery outside the window is the entire point of the trip.
