Bottom line: Da Nang and Hoi An are the two best destinations for deep exploration in central Vietnam. Da Nang is for beach resort relaxation; Hoi An is for slow-paced ancient town wandering. They’re 40 minutes apart — plan two nights in each. The Hoi An Lantern Festival (14th night of each lunar month) is the most stunning evening in Vietnam — the entire town glows with lanterns, creating the country’s most romantic tableau.

Central Vietnam’s Da Nang and Hoi An are a rare Southeast Asian combination: quality beaches and a UNESCO World Heritage ancient town in one trip. Compared to Northern Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay and Hanoi, the pace is slower, prices are lower, and crowds are more manageable.

Da Nang — Beach Relaxation at Its Best

Da Nang has one of Vietnam’s finest beaches — My Khe Beach, stretching roughly 30 km of white sand with fine grains and gentle waves. Da Nang is also one of Vietnam’s most affordable coastal cities: five-star resort prices are a third of Sanya’s.

Recommended Da Nang Activities:

  • Ba Na Hills: French mountaintop theme park; ride the world’s longest single-cable car to the summit
  • Dragon Bridge: Fire and water show every Saturday night at 9 PM
  • My Khe Beach Sunrise: Wake up at 5 AM to catch it — more breathtaking than the sunset

Get a Vietnam eSIM via Airalo — 30-day 15GB for about USD 8, 60% cheaper than airport SIM cards, with hotspot sharing.

Hoi An Ancient Town

Hoi An was one of Southeast Asia’s most important trading ports between the 15th and 19th centuries. Its preserved buildings blend Chinese, Japanese, French, and Vietnamese local styles — it is UNESCO World Heritage listed.

Must-Visit Sights

  • Japanese Covered Bridge (Lai Vien Kieu): A stone bridge built by Japanese merchants in 1630, with a Chinese-style temple on top
  • Fujian Assembly Hall (Phuc Kien): The most ornate of the Chinese assembly halls
  • Lantern Street: At night, hung with colorful lanterns — Hoi An’s most iconic image
  • Night Market: Local food and handicrafts, 30% cheaper than daytime

Da Nang to Hue: Hai Van Pass Self-Drive

The Hai Van Pass road from Da Nang to Hue is dubbed “one of life’s must-drive roads.” The film Kong: Skull Island was partly shot here. The road runs 21 km at 496 m elevation, with sweeping views of the entire Da Nang Bay below.
